IL DUOMO (THE CATHEDAL)

The King Carl II d'Angiò started its construction beginning in 1294 on the place of ancient religious buildings, some of these were destroyed (among them the Stefania cathedral, of the fifth century) and others were preserved and inserted in the "angioina" structure (the basilica of Santa  Restituta and the Baptistry of Saint Giovanni in Fonte , fourth century). The façade  has been reconstructed many times and restored to the original shapes in the late '800. The inside,latin cross with three aisles,is  richly decorated. The ceiling with wooden beams was made during the XVII century. great interest is also for the Chapel of the Treasure of Saint Gennaro built up in baroque style in the seventeenth century,for thee visit to the excavations of anciet palaeo-christians buildings and the show of the Treasure itself.
In the cathedral happens the liquefaction of the blood of Saint Gennaro, the famouse "miracle of San Gennaro",twice times per year,it is a sign of good luck,because San Gennaro is the patron saint of the city.
