Mercadante Theatre was born with the name of “Teatro del Fondo”, from the name of the society that built up the structure in 1778, with the money confiscated to the Order of the Jesuits no more existing. It was inaugurated in 1779 with the opera "L’infedele fedele", music by Cimarosa, mainly dedicated to the “opera”, was actively part of the political and cultural changes of the time of the “Repubblica Partenopea” in 1799. In the 1870 took the name of Mercadante Theatre, in homage of a Neapolitan musician.
