MERCADANTE THEATRE

Mercadante Theatre was born  with the name of “Teatro del Fondo”, from the name of the society that built up the structure in 1778, with the money confiscated to the Order of the Jesuits no more existing. It was inaugurated in 1779 with the opera "L’infedele fedele", music by Cimarosa, mainly dedicated to the “opera”, was actively part of the political and cultural changes of the time of the “Repubblica Partenopea” in 1799. In the 1870 took the name of Mercadante Theatre, in homage of  a Neapolitan musician. In 1914 it there was a famous “futurist” event organized by Marinetti, and subsequently its great protagonists were Marta Abba and Luigi Pirandello.
Restored between 1920 and 1938, It was closed  in the 1962  due to static reasons, and finally It was restored by the Neapolitan Concil in 1979. Between 1980 and the 1990 It has had a varied programming; from 1995 up today We have had  interesting  seasons proposed by the Conci of Naples and other Agencies, which have contributed to increase  the cultural importance in the city.
