MERGELLINA

It is one of the symbolic places  of Naples, sung for its beauty since the antiquity by Plinio, Seneca, Svetonio, Tacito, Silio Italico, Stazio and by Virgilio, where, according to the legend,He composed the “Georgiche”. In the Middle Ages it was described by Boccaccio and Sannazzaro, in the modern age by many others, among them Goethe, Grimm and D’Annunzio. It still preserves its fascination even if it is very busy and the tourist port covers nearly the sight of the sea and the road is flanked by chalets and by characteristic benches of sale of “taralli” and other specialties, road from which is possible to watch the wonderful sight of the Neapolitan gulf in which the huge “Vesuvio” shows up very clearly.
A steep stairway leads to the church of “Santa Maria del Parto” built up by Sannazzaro during the XVI century in which there is his funeral monument.
