PIAZZA DEL PLEBISCITO

Ancient “open space of palace” (Royal) center of the public ceremonies and popular festivities, it took the name from the plebiscite for the annexation to the reign of Italy of 1861. In it shows the royal palace built up during the XVII sec.
During the time of the Spanish domination become effectively the main residence of the king when the Reign become independent  in the 1734 with the dynasty of the Borboni. All around to the public square Gioacchino Murat  made to build up in the 1810 the arcade.With the return of the dynasty of the Borboni in the 1815 Ferdinand I made to erect the church of Saint Francesco as ballot for reconquers of the reign on the model of the Pantheon of Rome.

We can see moreover the palace of the Prefettura and the palace of the prince of Salerno both of the ‘700.

In the center there are two equestrian statues made by Canova that represent Carl III and Ferdinand I in classic roman garments
