SAN DOMENICO MAGGIORE
Main church of the Dominican order, was rebuilt up during the reign of Carl II d'Angiò in gotich style (1283-1324),it was set on the ancient Church of Saint Michele (still visible). The main entrance with the pointed arch and the wooden door of the 1300's is currently in the inside of a courtyard but we can go inside from the apse in the public square. The inside, Latin cross with three naves, was changed in the XVII century, restored with neo-gothic shapes in the XIX century. In one of the lateral chapels is conserved the "ceocifisso su tavola" (crucifix on table)that according to the tradition, spoke to Saint Tommaso d' Aquino approving its philosophical work: the Dominican Convent was in fact in the middle age, center of the University where Saint Tommaso taught theology, and where He died. |
