SANNAZZARO THEATRE

The Sannazaro theatre is in via Chiaia, one of the most elegant ways in Naples. It was built up in the second half of the IX sec on a land of the Spanish Mercedari Fathers, who, of course, didn’t agree with the decision, even asking the participation of the Bishop but without results and the theatre was inaugurated the evening of 26 December of the 1874. theatre began quickly one of the most important in Naples and the first one to being illuminated with electric light in 1888. Were palyed works of the best Italian writers(Novelli, Zecconi, Duse, Negri), in order to become at the beginning of the 900 the privileged scene of the most popular works of Eduardo Scarpetta(Un turco napoletano,miseria e nobiltà,a’ santarella). After a period of decadence it came back to its old magnificence thanks to the works of the  De Filippo brothers (Eduardo , Peppino and Titina) sons of Scarpetta.Later on there was a very long period of decadence (it was used as cinema) but it came back again to new splendor in the‘70 thanks to the  works of Luisa Conte and actually thanks to the work the daughter Brigida.
