THE CASTLE OF S.ELMO

It occupies the top of the hill of the Vomero, highest of the city. It was made to erect with the name of BELFORTE in the 1300 from the Angioini. In ` the 500 for the willing of viceroy Don Pedro di Toledo, the first construction was pulled down and replaced with the huge fortress realized with plant of six tips star, in a position to resisting to the new artilleries of the time. Later on it began part of the new walls of Naples that were connected going back to the hill until the fort. During the revolt of Masaniello it was takes as shelter by viceroy court and in the 1799 last defenders of the “Partenopea Republic” who surrendered with the promise of amnesty then not maintained from the Borboni. In ` the ‘800 it had also jail function. Currently it is open to the pubblic: from the glacis a complete panorama to 360 degrees of the city is visible.there are also several exhibitions.

Next to it rises the certosa of Saint Martino with annexed Museum.
