THE EGGCASTLE (IL CASTELL DELL'OVO)

Its name derives from an ancient legend, according to it,Virgilìo (considered a wizard in the Middle Ages) would have hidden an egg and untill it had not been found and broken the castle would not have been conquered. It occupies the little isle of Megaris. that constitutes a part of an ancient vulcanic crater (the other part is the Echia mount, just in front of it): it was occupied in classic age from a part of the villa of Lucullo in which the last roman emperor was relegated, Romolo Augustolo. In the middle age it was center of a enoby of moks. The first fortifications rose in normann age  while the true was made to build up by Federico II with who it began the royal residence. It was nearly totally  destroyed in I besiege  of the 1503 during the war Spanish/French and therefore reconstructed with modern criteria, the recent restorations have brought to light the ancient structures above all  the Columns and the open galleries of the Aragonese age.
There is also “The ethnographic Museum” and several temporary shows. The rest of the little isle is occupied by the colorfull “ Seafaring Village” (or of Saint Lucia ) with several typical restaurants.
