NAPLES AND ITS CASTLES
Naples had not natural defences because it was built up on a level land,so It needed, since ancient time, strong walls on this low land. In the Middle Age,on these strong walls,They added some castles, the first was Castel Capuano, and then the Maschio Angioino, which were also used as royal residences, while outside the walls were fortificated the little island of Megaride (Castel dell'ovo) and the hill of San Martino (Castell S. Elmo). During the XVI century the walls and the castles were rebuilt again to resist to new kind of artillery, and they were deeply modified assuming the shape that we can admire today. During the XVII century an integreted system of defence was created, it joined with strongs walls, the city to the hill of S.Martino, but later on they were pulled down and today remain only few signs of them.
