The famous fairy tale by Charles Perrault is one of the most beloved of stories. Humiliated by her stepmother and her stepsisters, Cinderella never loses the ability to dream of achieving happiness. The first performance was staged at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow on 21 November 1945, in the immediate post-war period. The ballet returned to the scenes of the choreographic world. Frederick Ashton's version, showcased in Covent Garden, London in 1948, surpassed all previous editions. In 1955, Carla Fracci, not yet twenty years old, astonished the audience with an interpretation that has accompanied her for many years. The marvellous score of Prokofiev, acute, dynamic and pressing enough to emphasize the comic and grotesque scenes, reaches its highest peaks in the wonderful and swirling waltzes of the second act. The choreographic version of Rudolf Nureyev (1986) staged at the Teatro San Carlo in 1991, was set in the Hollywood of the 30s; that of Matthew Bourne (1997) in London, during the Second World War. Among contemporary productions, the Cendrillon by Maguy Marin (1985) stands out, a fierce satire of the world of children.
